Project Threshold Series 1:
Wading Into Darkness

by Craig Crawford

Genre: Horror, Science Fiction

Most people don’t believe in monsters, assuming people are hallucinating or crazy. A secret organization knows we live in a multiverse. Sometimes the barriers between worlds opens and things slip into ours. Nasty things that prey on us.

This group is Project Threshold and it stands between us and the monsters. Direct Contact Teams wade in to contain or kill any threats to humanity. There’s a price, however, and unless these agents are smart and savvy enough, dying comes quick and without warning. And, sometimes dying is in the line of duty is the better option.

Project Threshold wades in where others can’t or won’t. They have one objective: Protect humanity from darkness.

Wading into Darkness contains all stories from series one of the Project Threshold books.

Project Threshold: Team Berger: Division 1

In a multiverse where the walls are thin between our world and others, Project Threshold stands between humanity and monsters crossing over to threaten us. Harris Berger and his team intervenes on our behalf. Death waits around every corner but dying isn’t the worst thing they have to endure. Berger wades in with his team: Sam, Billy, Jacks, Jessie, and their new recruit, Pendelhaven. Team Berger faces an unknown advanced civilization, mimics loose on the streets of Chicago killing homeless people, dealing with the aftermath of witnessing awful things, mermaids in the Midwest and an apartment where people start committing suicide for no apparent reason.

Project Threshold: Team Talise: Division 2

Talise Randall leads Division-2, dropping in to protect us while trying to keep her own team safe. With minor psychic powers and learning from Kali who’s even more powerful, Bodi and Milla complete their ranks. Team Talise goes head to head with an unstoppable entity, an otherworldly jealous boyfriend, a haunted museum, a Victorian home with much more than a ghost, and her team discovers what happens to all those lost socks from people’s dryers.

Project Threshold: Team Riker: Division A

In Alaska, all manner of entities and monsters cross into our world from other dimensions and Hannah Riker and her team are the gatekeepers. Riker has a personal score to settle, hunting the monster that slaughtered her parents when she was a girl. Neville, Toddy and Melissa McCoy have her back as they follow in the wake of beings dispensing justice and marking their victims. They intervene on a resort where people disappear even during daylight, fend off a tribe of furry humanoids claiming ownership of a valley, and they stumble upon an ancient, unkillable entity bent on the destruction of humanity.

Project Threshold: Finale

Greed releases something without compassion or care. Its sole purpose is to cleanse the Earth of humans. Starting in Canada, it destroys everyone it crosses paths with, making its way to bigger settlements. Weapons won’t kill it and the only group who might be able to save humanity is Project Threshold.

  1. If you scroll up about halfway there are 3 YouTube videos. I accidentally made contact with a Youtuber and created video animations of the first stories from each of the first 3 books. So you can listen to The Cave, IT Walks and Curse of the Ancients for free to get a feel for my writing and a taste of what the stories are all about :)

      1. Sorry--missed this. I think I've always been telling stories. As a kid, when I played with toys and action figures I was always creating story lines and scenarios. As a teen, I discovered Dungeons and Dragons and found I liked running the game more than playing--I got to be the story teller. It was then I also tried my hand at writing.

As for the horror, my mom was huge into horror so I grew up reading the greats like Lovecraft, Poe, Ambrose Bierce, and watching old horror movies as well as contemporary. I'm also into cryptids which shows its influence in some of these stories.

        Thanks for asking!

  2. I had one period where I was getting people attempting to get in. I am currently running my WordPress sites through GoDaddy--I ended up changing passwords and it quit. I get updates though when people are commenting or anything is happening with my sites.

    1. Thank you! You can scroll up and three of the stories in the set have been made into YouTube narrations so you can check out my writing style :)

I also have a website dedicated to these stories and you can get background BIO's on the characters and other info.

    1. Thanks. If you scroll up you can find 3 of the stories on YouTube after I connected with Nigel Watson of TAIles of the Cryptkeeper, and you can listen for free to get a feel for my writing style.

  3. This sounds like a great Horror Science Fiction book. I like the cover.

    1. Thank you. I've got a projectthreshold.com website dedicated to these stories and if you scroll up you can listen to 3 stories narrated on YouTube. Thanks for taking a look.

    1. Thanks for the positive feedback! Above you can click and listen to 3 of the stories in the series. I accidentally connected with a Youtuber named Nigel Watson and he liked the stories enough to narrate the 3 with animations, but they're a nice intro into my writing style.

  4. This sounds like a great read for the summer. I am loving the cover too. Sounds like one that will keep me reading all night for sure!

    1. Thank you! You can listen to 3 stories above from the YouTube links. And you can check out the website for info on the world, characters and other goodies. Thanks for checking in!

  5. I like everything about this series - genre title and covers!
Thank you for sharing this excerpt.

  6. Not my genre but I think there are times I should read things that are a total escape (this sounds like it would be that)

    1. Thank you for checking it out at least. If you were going to start horror I'm not sure this is a good one to start with :) :) :) I do prefer more psychological horror. I'm not into the slasher side of horror, but there is some graphic violence--if it fits within a story, I'll put it in there, but I like to focus on the characters and how they deal with the horrific.

Still, if you have friends into horror, please let them take a look :)

    1. Thank you! If you scroll up you can listen to 3 of the stories. I teamed up with a YouTuber named Nigel Watson and he liked them enough to narrate the stories and used AI animations. It will give you a feel for my writing style. Appreciate you stopping by.

    1. Thank you. I'm proud of these stories. You can listen to 3 of them narrated by clicking the YouTube links above if you care to. I appreciate you stopping by and commenting!

    1. Thanks! You can listen to 3 of the stories narrated if you get curious. Just scroll up to the YouTube links. I accidentally crossed paths with a YouTuber named Nigel Watson and he read some of my stories and was excited enough about them to create those narrations along with AI images.

Thanks for checking out my stories!

    1. Thanks for checking it out! I have to give credit to my press: RedCape Publishing from Brighton in the UK. They've been really supportive of my stories!

  7. Just for background, this started as a single story. It was The Cave (which you can find above in the YouTube links). I got it picked up to be published by a press and they asked if I had more stories in that world. Actually I'd been working on a novel but was only about halfway into it but that idea of more stories got my brain going.

I ended up writing 18 more stories to create Season 1. I kept the short story format creating a serial of stories and divided into 3 novellas, each focusing on a different team of characters as they battle interdimensional threats. The 4th novella is a finale bringing all of the teams together to go up against a common enemy.

19 stories all connected so you can break up the reading as you find time. I grew up admiring serial cartoons and even weekly TV shows--which most follow a similar format. It was a lot of fun to write and led to the second season which is releasing now. Season 3 is beginning and should wind up the series for now.

    1. Thank you! I liked horror serials growing up like Jonny Quest. I like the idea of independent stories linked together with crossovers of characters and intertwining plots.

    1. Thanks! If you scroll up you can find links to YouTube narrations of 3 stories. I accidentally connected with a Youtuber named Nigel Watson and he liked the stories enough to create those three complete with AI images and scenes. You can listen and get a taste of my writing style.

Appreciate you saying hello and checking out my work.

    1. Thanks! I work with a press out of the UK called RedCape Publishing and they designed the cover for that book. The individual novellas all have different covers and you can see one below. I really liked them because the covers treat the stories like case files:

    1. Hi, thanks for checking in!

I do. First and foremost figure out what works best for you: what times of day you get your most creative, where that needs to happen, and how often. It's all up to you. When I was first writing I was told all of these "rules" about writing and what I've learned is that none of that is set in stone.

I write best at night, and can write almost anywhere. I also do not write every day. I believe you have to find your own rhythms. I do write regularly, but I take breaks too because I think you need time to recharge your creative side. I rarely write much in the summer--it's kind of my down time. I knock out the most words between January and May--it's my high productivity time. BUT, that doesn't mean that will work for you.

Take other people's advice with a critical eye and find out what works for you.

And the other thing is patience and perseverance. Keep writing and keep working and opportunities will happen. It's a pain in the butt, but it works.

If you need help with building well rounded characters you can go to my website and download a "Character Development Questionnaire" for free: https://craiglcrawfordbooks.com/extra-stuff/ It's just a list of things I ask about my main characters that really helps me get to know them, so that when I start writing, I know how they think and react.

Feel free to ask more questions and thanks for stopping by! -Craig

    1. I appreciate you checking it out! It's available in multiple formats and you can get an idea of my writing style by listening to any of the 3 narrated stories above!

    1. Thanks! It's one of my favorite story themes too. I grew up reading horror and fantasy and loved the intersections of multiverses!

I appreciate you checking it out!

  11. We love HORROR books. Its pretty much our entire library rental list. This would be a good addition to our personal library. Those YT vids were fascinating.

    1. Thank you! I love writing it and my Project Threshold world just keeps giving me stories. I'm up to Season 2 and I'm working on Season 3 now.

And yes, I thought the videos narrated by Nigel were awesome. He does some great stuff and it was a great collaboration!

      Thanks for checking this out!

    1. Thank you! You can scroll up and listen to 3 of the stories which have been narrated by Nigel Watson on Youtube to get a feel for my writing style. 1. That was an accidental collaboration with Nigel Watson and his channel, but I thought they turned out great too. I like the serial format for these stories and it kind of lends itself to story narrations.

      Thanks for checking these out!
