I have always loved reading crime fiction, from the novels of Agatha Christie and PD James, to Ian Rankin and Peter Lovesey, among many others. This genre has so many talented authors, a topic which I will explore more in my newsletters.
I started writing the Tom Robertson series in 2020, but quickly realised I had so much to learn about writing, crime, and then actually producing the book. I am indebted to all those who have helped me along the way.
The first book I wrote, Darkness to Light, has been reworked, and will probably be re-titled too, to become book 4 in this series. I also wrote books 5 and 6 as I honed my craft. I felt readers would benefit from Tom’s backstory, so I wrote Deadly Justice, now book 2, Murder at the Museum, and book 3, Dangerous Reprisals. Then I decided the series needed a new start, so I wrote the first book, Wrath of Revenge.

Writing crime….
I really wanted my books to be authentic. And this means getting the police procedure correct. Tying it into the storyline can be challenging, particularly when the plot requires an officer to appear in a certain scene. A couple of years ago I went on an online course, Solving a Murder, with Graham Bartlett, a former police Superintendent and now an advisor to authors. We learned about crime scenes and procedures, who does what, how they collect forensics, the importance of officers wearing protective clothing. When a uniformed officer is first on the scene their clothing could be bagged up to prevent transferring microscopic cellular material. Sine the course I have frequently consulted Graham. I can be in the middle of writing a scene and suddenly I think, um.. not sure that could happen… But the key is to find a way so plot and procedure work hand in hand.
