Rummaging in the cupboards to find something to scrounge up for dinner he tried relaxing his jaw. If he kept it clamped tight like he was doing now, he’d end up with lock jaw, or arthritis or something equally awful. But, he was irritated that he was here, in this house, that he swore he wouldn’t come back to until it was his, completely, lock stock and barrel. Trouble was, when he tried to think of a safe place to keep Megan, this was the first place that came to mind. He knew it was safe, he’d built it with safety in mind. In his line of work, it wasn’t uncommon for some of the people he had to locate to have angry family members or associates and he didn’t want to be taken unawares. Which reminded him. Walking to the desk in the corner of the living room, he unlocked the top drawer. Lifting the lid on the laptop he kept in there he waited for it to wake up, logged in, pulled up his security system. Turning all the cameras on and monitoring the entire property via closed circuit monitors, he went back to the kitchen to finish looking for something to eat. Tomorrow he’d have to see if Emmy could bring some food up here.

A few cans of soup, some crackers, and some cans of peaches would be lunch. Pretty bleak, maybe he’d call Emmy to bring supper up here. Turning he spied the wine rack, ah things were looking up. Selecting a nice, full bodied red sangria, he set it on the counter as he pulled a pan from the drawer below the stove to heat the soup in. Setting to the task of pulling bowls and spoons from their respective spaces, he set their eating places at the counter. Wiping the dust from the wine glasses he set them in front of the bowls and opened the shallow drawer that held the wine opener.

Popping the cork from the top, Megan entered the kitchen, a soft smile on her face. “How long have you lived here?”

“About eleven years.”

She walked to the french doors and looked out over the scenery. “But, you don’t live here now?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“It’s a long story.” Pouring their glasses of wine. “It’s also temporary.”

She turned toward him, crossed her arms over her chest and stared at him. “Where do you live since you’re not living here?”

He took a deep breath. Figures she’d want to know all about him. He didn’t usually share much of his life. Still too much up in the air.

“I have a little cottage down the mountain by my sister’s house. I stay there when I’m not working.”

He watched her move toward him, the sun streaming in the French doors perfectly outlined her body in those sexy jeans and pink t-shirt. Purely sexy from head to toe. He’d bet she didn’t even know it. Her full breasts jiggled as she walked and his mouth went dry. It’d been far too long. Unfortunately he hadn’t thought this through completely. Staying here with her just might be harder than he thought.

“So, you work so much you have a house in the mountains you don’t want to live in because it’s a long story so you stay in the cabin down by your sister. And then you go to work. Is that about right?”

“About.”

She chuckled. “Well, I don’t know how I’m going to get any peace here what with you talking so much and all.”

Turning to the stove, he stirred the soup, twisted the knob on the stove to turn the burner off and filled both of their bowls.

“Vegetable soup and crackers and wine. It’s not much, but it’s all I have. I’ll call Emmy to bring up some food later. I also have some meat in the freezer downstairs that I can thaw if Emmy’s busy.”

He sat next to her at the counter and they began eating in silence. Or so he thought.

“What does Emmy do for a living?”

“She’s a defense attorney. A damn good one too.”

“Is your whole family involved with criminals?”

He chuckled, “Nah, just Emmy and me. Dawson is a plumber and owns his own company. He deals in shit, just not the same kind as Emmy and I.”

She giggled. “That’s a good one.”

“So tell me about Waylon. Why did you marry a piece of scum like him to begin with?”

She bit into a cracker and stared straight ahead. “Gosh damn, but isn’t that the million dollar question right now? I’ve been kicking myself since the first year.”

She sipped her wine and he watched her swallow, the graceful curve of her neck, her unblemished skin, her auburn hair looked thick and shiny and he wanted to touch it. Run his fingers through its softness. Tuck the strands that had escaped her ponytail behind her delicate ear.

As a USA Today Best Selling Author, I’ve had the joy of publishing dozens of romance novels over the years. I focus primarily on romantic suspense, blending a bit of reality with make-believe to create stories filled with heat, heart, and all the feels. While I call Green Bay, Wisconsin, home, I often find myself traveling to destinations unknown on my motorcycle. But it was romance novels that truly took me to places I’d only dreamed of, solidifying my love for all things romance. My family keeps me grounded when my imagination takes me too far, offering both a reality check and a gentle nudge to keep it real.

I come from a family of veterans. My grandfather, father, brother, two sons, and one daughter-in-law are all veterans. Needless to say, I am proud to be an American and proud of the service my amazing family has given.

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

I’ve always had “stories” in my head, I simply didn’t know what they were. Characters talking and going through issues and coming out of them happy. Over and over. Back in the day, I simply didn’t know how to move through the publishing world, and life got in the way – work, marriage, kids, college – there was always something.

As time wore on, those characters kept chattering away in my head. I was a paralegal by trade and I changed jobs at one point (actually a lot of points, but this one in particular left its mark), and the attorney I worked for was nasty. She was a horrible person to work for, and I hated every minute I had to be there. My husband told me, “You’ll always work for people like her unless you sit down and start writing.”  So, I did. That very night I pulled out my computer and began jotting down a story. I didn’t know what I was doing. I’d read countless books, so I was trying to follow a “formula” of sorts. That first book was rough! And it took me a long time. Close to a year. I’d come home from that awful job, have dinner, shake the ICK off me from work, then sit down and write.

Once I felt my book was finished I began looking for an editor. I should have done that sooner, but I was a newbie. I found an editor and holy man, was there a lot of work involved!  But, she helped me polish my book up, and then I began researching publishing. This was 2014 and indie publishing was a thing, but scoffed at in social circles. I hesitated, submitted to agents, got turned down and decided to hell with it, I’m self-publishing. I’ve worked with a couple of publishing houses over the years, but each time I’ve asked for my rights back because they don’t do a thing for me as an author. Now, I’ve published over 48 books and still going.

What is something unique/quirky about you?

It’s probably not unique or quirky to other authors, but when I’m in the midst of writing a story, those characters feel real to me. I think about them all day and how to ‘help’ them.

What inspired you to write this book?

The Lynyrd Station Protectors – Security Omnibus is a passion project. The four books included are books I love. When I wrote the first book, Finding His Fire, I felt I’d really hit my writing stride at that point. I love the characters. I love the setting. I love the brotherhood. I became inspired to write them in a dream. I saw Ford Montgomery clearly in my mind. A tortured soul trying to pull himself together. He was perfect. And I needed a heroine who had issues, lots of them, but wasn’t a shrinking violet. Enter Megan Marshall. A sweet woman, who had been a nurse until her ex-husband got her fired, and was waiting tables and trying to rebuild her life. As it once again comes crashing down on her, Ford enters her life and leaves her little choice what needs to be done to save herself. The other books have equally passionate protectors and strong women!  I love this series and always direct readers there first.

Where did you come up with the names in the story?

My reader group, PJ Fiala’s Road Queens, names my characters, businesses and places in my books. When you suggest a name and I use it, you are mentioned in the dedication in front of each book. We’ve been doing this for years.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

I love the characters. Even the bad ones – those I loved to hate them.

Who designed your book covers?

The gorgeous cover and all the connected materials to this Special Edition, were created by Miranda Grissom Designs! She did a fantastic job.

If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

I think Ford Montgomery should be played by John Krasinski, and Megan Marshall would be played by Bryce Dallas Howard. Lincoln Winters should be played by Colin Ferrell and Skye Sommers would be played by Katheryn Winnick. Dodge Sager should be played by Travis Fimmel, and Jax Masters would be played by Zoe Saldana. And Rory Richards should be played by Clive Standen and Alice Beggs should be played by Jessica Chastain. Oh what an attractive, amazing cast!

Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

I appreciate every single one of you. I thank you for taking the time to read my books and leave reviews. I enjoy spending time with you in my reader group. Our Monday Night Lives are enjoyable and I look forward to them every week.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

All are based off of real people. Some are bits and pieces of multiple individuals. Some are based off people I’ve met or know.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?

All the time!  I can be writing away, thinking we’re headed in a different direction, then, BAM! Something comes out of a character’s mouth or a character does something and I’ll wonder where that came from, but I like it. Then I have to rethink where the story is going. I do believe my characters know best!

Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
