She noticed one of her neighbors watching her through the window, seemingly checking if she was alright. About an hour later, the neighbor approached, concerned, and asked if she was okay. Kelsey explained that she had called the police because someone had attempted to break into her house. Despite repeatedly calling the station and being assured that officers were on their way, there was no response from them. Brenda kept calling, but Kelsey couldn’t bring herself to answer. She finally picked up and informed Brenda that an emergency had come up, promising to meet her first thing in the morning. She chose not to divulge anything about Luke, thinking he could explain from jail. Exhausted from the ordeal, sleep was all she desperately needed.

Why I Became a Writer

I have always loved books. You will never find me without a dog-eared paperback or, now, my Kindle. Bookstores have always been my happy place, and I always have way too many TBRs. I never thought I could be a writer, but I constantly had story ideas running through my head.

That all changed two summers ago when I met some indie authors and realized that people could be writers on their own terms — and I could be too. The real catalyst, though, was my dad’s death. He had been my best friend, always there for me, and we shared a love for literature. I was trying to figure out a way to deal with my grief, and writing helped.

As a kid, I devoured all the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books I could find. Later, my dad and I would read Agatha Christie and so many other detective novels. I thought, I’ve never read a detective novel with a father–daughter team. That’s how The San Francisco Connection was born. Patrick is based loosely on my dad, who became blind later in life, and Kelsey is me — if I could walk and was younger. It’s like we get to keep having adventures together. I know he would be proud.
