Xonarye rise again

Xonarye: Australia
Xonarye Book 1
by S.H.S.
Genre: Travel Adventure, Mystery

One hidden book. A forgotten country. Three mates on a journey that could change everything.
Nineteen-year-old Leaf Brodie is just an ordinary apprentice from Naracoorte, a small country town tucked between Adelaide and Melbourne. He lives a simple life apprentice builder, beers with mates by night until a routine renovation job uncovers something that doesn’t belong: a sealed, leather-bound book hidden inside an old farmhouse wall.
The book tells of a place that doesn’t exist on any map. A country called Xonarye, once nestled between Yemen and Somalia, rich in a rare, indestructible mineral called Xzed. Long ago, the people of Xonarye vanished beneath the ocean to escape war and greed—but not before scattering twenty-six mysterious keys across the globe. Now, generations later, the legacy of that hidden world has landed in Leaf’s hands.
Driven by curiosity and loyalty, Leaf enlists his two closest mates Spence, a level-headed farmer, and Summo, a flashy car salesman with a sharp tongue to help him decipher the book’s secrets. Together, they uncover a forgotten legal contract, a hidden vault in Adelaide, and a belt buckle that can’t be melted, burned, or broken no matter what they throw at it. And then comes the final clue: a name, a country, and a warning.
Reblick, a shadowy global organisation, is also searching for the truth and they’re watching.
As the line between myth and reality begins to blur, Leaf is forced to make a choice: walk away and return to his normal life, or follow the trail to Cuba and beyond… risking everything to uncover the truth of Xonarye’s fate.

It’s the middle of January on a sizzling hot summer’s day, and we find Leaf working hard on an elegant old farm homestead that needs a lot of work to bring it back to its past glory. He’s wearing a tank top and footy shorts, and he is drenched in sweat. He is in the bathroom with a hammer and chisel, breaking the tiles off the wall to prepare for a brand -new bathroom. He places the chisel next to the edge of a tile and swings the hammer down, forcing a few tiles to bounce off the wall and burst into tiny bits on the floor. He breaks more tiles off the wall, and this time some of the wall itself comes away. He thinks, Dammit, now I’ll have to repair the wall before I can install the new tiles.
As Leaf’s eyes adjusted to the dust floating in the sunlight coming through the window, he noticed something lying on a piece of timber from where the wall broke away. It was a rectangular, beaten -up, rusty -looking metal box that had seen better days.
As he picked it up, he could hear something slide about in the box. He thought it odd that a box was hidden in a bathroom, of all places. Leaf attempted to pry it open with his hands; however, the locks were rusted shut. Clearly, the moisture from being in the bathroom over the years had had an effect on the box.
Leaf grabbed his trusty hammer and chisel, and started whacking into the hinges in an attempt to gain access to the contents of the box. After a few minutes of laying into it and sweating some more, he finally succeeded. What Leaf found inside was a rectangular object wrapped in black hessian. Carefully and very delicately, he unwrapped it.

I need you to get into that crate, ” she said, pointing to the middle of them. Leaf looked at her then looked back at the crates; it appeared as if there was just enough room for maybe two people to fit inside them at a squeeze.
He turned back to Selina and shook his head defiantly, indicating that he was not getting into what felt to him like a coffin.
Suddenly, Selina grabbed him and twisted his arm behind his back in what seemed like the blink of an eye. She leaned right up to his ear, and whispered, “ You need to hurry up and get into the crate before anyone sees us. I will be right next to you inside there.”
Leaf took another deep breath, feeling extremely anxious about the idea, and Selina released his arm and gave him a little nudge forward.
Leaf slowly slid over one of the edges of the crate and carefully laid down inside. Selina then did the same until they were both now lying in the crate, shoulder to shoulder, staring straight up into the afternoon sky.
Leaf was lying there in a state of anxiety, wondering what was going to happen next, when suddenly the lid was being placed on the crate. He instinctively put both his hand up to protect himself, but before he could stop the lid, Selina put her arm across his body.
Then, just as the wooden lid was about to be sealed, the friendly face of Vicente, the ship’s captain, appeared, and he said, “ You two all good?”
Selina gave him a quick wink back, and he slowly closed the lid, leaving nothing but little rays of sunshine squeezing through the cracks.
There was basically no room to move at all inside the crate, and Leaf couldn’t help thinking that this must be what it feels like to be in a coffin.

When the dojo finally came into view, Leaf’s sense of calm and safety was suddenly shattered.
The main gate hung open, crooked on its hinges. Shards of splintered wood lay scattered across the stone pathway. A few windows had been shattered, with broken glass spread all around him . The paper screens of the main hall were torn and flapping loosely in the breeze. It looked like a storm had blown through but there had been no storm.
Leaf’s heart pounded in his chest. He quickened his pace, stepping over the debris, eyes scanning every corner. The courtyard was a mess, the practice weapons strewn about, some cracked in half. The tatami mats were shredded, spilling straw across the floor like scattered autumn leaves.
“Selina?” he called out, his voice sharp against the silence. “Yuji? Kenji?”
Nothing but the breeze whistling through some rocks around the dojo.
The rooms were upturned. Mats tossed aside, scrolls unravelled, some torn. Kenji’s study , usually immaculate , was in chaos. Books were thrown from their shelves, papers were scattered, and ink was spilled like blood across the floor. Kenji’s prized calligraphy scrolls hung lopsided, some sliced through as if by a blade. The room smelled of old ink and cold air, carrying a whisper of ash as if something had been burned.
Leaf’s mind raced. Who would do this? Why?
He moved quickly through each room, heart hammering. No one.
No sign of life. He reached the small back garden where the snow had settled undisturbed.
Suddenly, footsteps crunched behind him. Leaf spun, fists clenched.
Selina stepped out from the shadows, her eyes sharp, surveying the damage.
“What happened?” she asked, voice low and controlled.
Leaf shook his head, the words tangled in his throat.
