“Just friends” isn’t working.
Sparks are flying.
Until dark clouds from the past threaten disaster.
A friends-to-lovers story from award-winning author Anne Carrole
Recent air force veteran and reluctant cowboy, Rusty “to the rescue” Russell, has set his sights on the attractive independent-minded event planner who says she’s too busy to get involved. That mindset is what makes Kristy Winslow a perfect candidate for a casual relationship. Because with past traumas still haunting him, he doesn’t dare commit to anything more. But keeping her at arm’s length is more difficult than he bargained for.
Kristy Winslow has no desire to date again, since her last relationship went terribly wrong. Besides she needs to focus on her new career opportunity because failure is not an option. But the charming cowboy’s persistence and promises of a no-strings fling has Kristy throwing caution to the wind. If only she can keep her mind on the job and her heart from getting broken by this complicated but intriguing redhead.
Love is in the air, but will demons from the past pull them apart or make them stronger together?

Kristy opened the door to the waiting area and walked out, expecting to meet the blond-haired, blue-eyed woman whose profile picture was on the Flowers by June website. Instead, a red-haired cowboy had folded his considerable height onto the two-cushion waiting room sofa. He was holding a white cowboy hat between his jean-clad legs, and a large notebook lay beside him on the seat.
What was a good-looking hunk of a cowboy doing in her waiting room? “May I help you?” Maybe he’d mistaken the An Affair to Remember sign on the door for something else entirely and had wandered in by mistake.
The cowboy’s grin stretched to his ears, giving him a cocky, almost mischievous look. One that most women would find charming. She was not most women.
“I’ve an appointment with Ms. Winslow.” He tipped his hat brim to his forehead.
“Well, you aren’t June, I take it.”
His blue eyes twinkled, and she felt a tingle somewhere in the vicinity of her belly. Odd that. She shifted her weight, hoping the feeling would go away.
“I’m her brother, and I’m here to represent her. She had a family emergency, and I offered to step in.”
“I hope everything is okay.”
He nodded, his smile still full and strong, as if he was amused at being in her office. “It will be. She asked me to meet with you and show you the portfolio, and she’ll call you tomorrow about pricing and all that stuff. She really is an excellent florist. Very creative, with a great sense of color.”
Now it was her turn to smile. She appreciated family loyalty, family support. The kind she’d always gotten from her mother, if not from her father. “Sounds like a plan. Come on in . . .” He hadn’t introduced himself.
“Rusty. Rusty Russell.”
She couldn’t help but look him over as he unfolded to his full height. That tingly sensation was back. He must be over six feet. His face was etched with high cheekbones, a Grecian nose, and a firm, wide jaw. He had a muscular build, as revealed by the blue T-shirt that stretched over his rather prominent arm muscles and the jeans that hugged a pair of strapping thighs. Way too handsome to be in her waiting room.
“For the hair color?”
“Yes, ma’am. Family thinks it suits, so I’m stuck with it.”
She motioned for him to enter her office and wondered why her heart was pounding. True that at five feet eight it wasn’t the norm for her to feel dwarfed by a man, but it certainly wasn’t fear that caused that reaction. Quite the contrary. He intrigued her. Most men of her acquaintance wouldn’t be caught dead lugging around a portfolio of flower arrangements. But he didn’t act as if there was anything strange about it and seemed happy to be helping his sister.
He squeezed into the bamboo-backed chair by her desk, and the seat seemed to shrink to child size. She’d rented the first chairs she’d seen at the furniture rental store. She made a mental note to get more substantial seating. She wanted clients to feel comfortable.
Usually she sat behind the desk in an effort to project a more businesslike and in-charge image, but for reasons she wasn’t about to examine, she opted to sit across from him in the other chair.
He swung toward her, their knees within inches of touching. Something else she should remedy by repositioning.
“Now show me what you’ve got.”
He winked, and heat rose to her cheeks. Goodness, she hoped she wasn’t blushing, but from his widening grin, that was a lost hope.

Career-minded Lexi Russell seeks a calm, predictable life that doesn’t require taking chances. But coming home to Wyoming for Thanksgiving, she finds out her carefully orchestrated life has imploded. Her “perfect” boyfriend has been cheating on her, her lucrative job has been eliminated, and the family ranch is on the chopping block. In addition, the teenage boy who broke her heart one summer a decade ago has turned into a handsome cowboy who’s planning on buying her family’s ranch with a lowball offer and her parents’ blessing. She’s got to figure out a way to help her parents avoid a serious mistake, find a new job, and stop her growing attraction to the cowboy who dumped her. With Christmas on the horizon, things take an unexpected turn that will force her to decide whether love is worth the risk.

The cold night air nipped at Cort’s skin as he walked to the pickup in stride with Lexi. He had to restrain himself from reaching for her hand, like he might have done if it had been a date. They’d spent considerable hours together, but far from making him ready for alone time, he wanted more of her company.
She was bright, funny, frank, and darn pretty. And she knew about ranching, even if she didn’t do it anymore. The perfect partner. But, unfortunately, the ranching part was the stickler. She didn’t want it and it was all he wanted.
How things had changed from that long-ago summer when she’d teased him about his city-boy ways and the future he’d laid out where he would be heading up some company, while all she’d wanted was to raise and train horses.
And look where they’d wound up.
As he shifted the truck into gear, he checked on her. Her head was leaning back against the headrest, a smile on her face, and her eyes closed.
“You have a buzz?” he asked. She’d only had two beers, and since he was driving, he’d stuck to one.
She chuckled. “Just feeling relaxed.”
He remembered what it’d been like when he’d quit working at his corporate job. It’d been like banging his head against the wall one day then suddenly finding his head resting on a soft pillow the next day. “Guess you haven’t been very relaxed in that job you had.” Maybe she’d reconsider her plans now that she didn’t have a job to immediately go back to.
And maybe he was dreaming.
“Not at all. You know what it’s like.”
“Yeah, crazy.” He turned onto the main highway and put some pressure on the gas. “That’s why I’m not doing it anymore. When the buyout came and everything sort of stopped for a moment, I realized how bad it had been, how much stress I’d been feeling. Then my uncle got sick, and by the time he passed, well, I didn’t want to go back anymore.”
She turned her head in his direction. “It’s tempting when everything stops. But, you know, ranching isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s risky. There’s a lot of stress and a ton more things you can’t control. Like the weather.”
“Or what my neighbors decide to do.” He glanced again at her. Her face was serene, not a frown line to be seen.
She closed her eyes and smiled. “That too. But I don’t want to talk about that. Let’s just enjoy the moment. I haven’t been able to do that in a long, long time.”
He turned the truck into her driveway. The headlights caught Bandit in the equipment barn doorway running around in circles. Barking filled the air.
“What the heck?” Lexi shot straight up in her seat.
Cort gunned the gas, and the truck bumped down the gravel drive like a runaway roller coaster. Something was wrong.

If THE COWBOY’S COUNTRY CHARM was made into a movie, I’d choose Sam Heughan for the lead role (although he’d have to lose his lovely accent) of Rusty “to the rescue” Russell. Sam isn’t a natural redhead, by the way. He dyed his hair for his Jaimie Fraser role in Outlander but he looks good as a redhead, don’t you think? At 6’3’ he has a brawny muscular frame and certainly looks like he could be an air force para-rescuer. I think he’d also look good in a cowboy hat, don’t you?
Tall and willowy Jennifer Lawrence would be my pick for Kristy Winslow. She has often played gutsy women with angst and that’s perfect for Kristy. Kristy’s trying to be independent and self-sufficient but she keeps getting pulled by forces out of her control.
The setting, of course, has to be the beautiful, rugged country of Wyoming. Where else for a series titled Wyoming Romance?
Ariel, the talented, if quirky, cousin would be played by Dakota Fanning who, at 5’ 4”, has the wide-eyed, petite look to pull it off. Her sister, Elle is 5’9” so Elle would be my second choice for Kristy’s role.
It’s fun playing casting director. Looking at the cover or if you’ve read THE COWBOY’S COUNTRY CHARM, do you agree with my casting choices or do you have someone else who you think should be considered?

question for author-What personal experiences or observations influenced your writing?
Hi Soha
Growing up on a farm, having a horse, and watching my sisters barrel race inspired the settings of my stories. But the characters in my books are an amalgamation of people I have met throughout my life, good points and flaws (because we all have them.) Thanks for asking–Anne
