BlackMoon’s tail wagged as he approached. His paws hit the grass, and he dug his nails into the ground to pull himself free of the water. She stepped back to give him room. Probably a good idea since I need to do this. He smiled as he shook his entire body. Water sprayed everywhere, and BlackMoon was the victim of his assault. DarkDeath let loose a hearty laugh as BlackMoon crouched to her stomach and covered her head with her paws. “Why did you do that?”

“Need to dry off somehow.”

“Sounds like you two are having a good time.”

DarkDeath turned his head toward the trees behind his daughter. Out of the shadows, another kyre stepped forward. He had silver fur with white paws and a scar stretched over his right eye. DarkDeath recognized him immediately.

“Scar! What are you doing here?”

“Thought I would see what trouble you were getting yourself into without the queen by your side,” Scar said with a grin.

DarkDeath made a point of shaking his fur to rid himself of the remaining water. BlackMoon huffed at him and sat back on her haunches, while Scar sat down and tilted his head. DarkDeath smirked.

“What?”

“Oh…nothing. I was just thinking I should have come sooner,” Scar said. “That way I could have seen how far you can fly.”

The two males burst out laughing while BlackMoon looked between them with confusion on her face. “I don’t get it. What’s so funny?” DarkDeath choked back his laugh, looked at her, then burst out laughing all over again. Scar was the first to stop, and soon after DarkDeath got himself under control.

“Don’t worry about it, BlackMoon,” Scar said. “It’s something between your father and me.”

“Oh, okay,” she said, tilting her ear to the side.

DarkDeath shook himself to relax his nerves. “I understand why you’re here, Scar. You’re always trying to sneak in on my alone time. As for you little girl, I would like to know why you’re here.”

BlackMoon’s happy demeanor disintegrated before his eyes. Her ears drooped, and her tail sagged. “I um…was hoping to get your help.” She avoided his gaze as he looked her up and down.

“Help with what?” Scar asked before DarkDeath could get a word in.

Flea-bitten squirrel—can’t he ever butt out and let me talk? DarkDeath thought to himself. BlackMoon continued to look at the ground right in front of her. Her tail stopped wagging and dipped between her legs. Something is wrong. She never acts like this unless she knows she is in trouble.

“I uh…”

“BlackMoon, what is it!” DarkDeath snapped. He hated trying to be patient when something told him he needed to be ready to attack. She jerked her head up and looked him in the eye for a second before she turned to Scar. She gulped.

“I lost Digger.”

Blake dozed off without realizing it, rubbing his eyes awake. I only shut my eyes for a second. What was that? Blake’s acute hearing allowed him to detect sounds in the surrounding landscape that most others couldn’t. The subtle pelting of pebbles put him in alert mode. His ears twitched at the sound of padded foot beats on the soil. He wasn’t entirely sure what kind of creature could be making that sound. Not that many creatures had come to live in this inhospitable land of rocks. The only thing he could guess was that a dwarf might be nearby, and that wasn’t good.

With his hand on his sword hilt he waited, praying to the gods that it was a mountain lion, or anything other than one of those grumbling dwarves. Salza grant me this one pardon, Kero will have my head if I start anything with the dwarves again.

He heard it coming closer, step-by-step. When the anxiety was too much to bear, Blake jumped into the air, slashing out with his sword. He did not want to harm the intruder, just show that he was armed. But to his surprise, he found himself lying flat on his back with his legs and arms sprawled out around him.

How can this be? I didn’t even see anything move. What in the world could be so fast?

“Hello, there! You aren’t one who can react very swiftly, are you?”

He looked around to find the source of the voice. “Where are you?”

“I’m over here, to your right.”

Blake found himself facing a wolf-like creature, known throughout the lands as kyres. From what he could tell by the kyre’s voice and the look of its body, it was a she.

“So, may I ask why you are here dark lady?”

“Lady? Well that is a new one.”

“And why is that?”

“I’m not much of a lady. Actually, I am more animal than anything.” She laughed.

“Lady wolf, not to be rude, but you have yet to answer my question.”

“Oh, yes, I forgot about that. I saw you and that red dragon flying over the forest, so I came to investigate.”

“Hmm… are you saying that you live inside the Forest of Ferrês?”

“Yes, my family and I live on this side of the forest to make sure that intruders don’t enter it and live.”

“Oh…” he gulped. “Are there by chance any others around the forest besides you and your family?”

“Oh yes, my kind have packs all over the forest,” she said. “But I am afraid you came to the forest at the wrong time of the season. The pups are beginning to leave their dens and the adults are far more territorial than usual.”

“Mmm…that could put a damper on things.” Blake rubbed his temples thinking about solutions to the problem presenting itself. “May I ask what your name is before we go on with this conversation?”

“Oh, I am sorry I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Blackmoon. I am the daughter of DarkDeath.”

Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?

Most the time the characters come to me before I write them. But I have had minor characters sprout up in the writing process. Then they take over and give me more ideas for stories that are within the same series or a standalone all on their own.

For example: I was writing “The Sunflower Meadow,” and one character was needed to fill a loophole in my story. He ended up catching my attention so much that I have a plan to circle back around and do a standalone book with him and one of the misunderstood characters in the book. This way to give them both a happily ever after.

What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?

Honestly, I don’t do research before I start a book. I don’t entirely know all I need to know when I start a project so I go with the flow. If I need additional information on something then I will either reach out to author friends for help or I will do my research online for the answer. Yeah, I take away from my writing and slow me down but I plan to make sure everything works out to the best of my ability at the end.

For example: Right now I am writing a chapter in my current WIP “The Emerald Knight.” I have to describe an outfit a scribe is wearing when the king enters the room to eat his lunch with his fellow companions. Right now I just have a basic description in place but I plan to go back in and make it more real by researching the garb the commoners wore back then.

Do you see writing as a career?

Right now, I would say it is an expensive hobby I have. I run my publishing business called Storyteller Publisher 22, LLC. This is where I publish my short stories, novellas, and novels through right now. I also publish box sets that feature other authors around the world. My main goal is to get where I make more money each year and grow my following. I don’t do it for the money and learned to do a lot of things on my own to save money. But the main thing is giving people something to enjoy and have some fun entertainment. Plus, I get to help other authors make their dreams come true.

What do you think about the current publishing market?

I follow mainly indie authors now. Rarely do I read books by traditional authors anymore. The only traditional authors I read are ones like Mercedes Lackey, Kristen Britain, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. That is mainly because I grew up on their books before I fell in love with the indie industry of publishing. As for the indie publishing industry I love reading romance and find that there is always something to read. But I find it harder to find Epic Fantasy that I enjoy. Mainly because there are so many books to pick from that there aren’t enough hours in the day to read them all. So I like to pick which ones I spend my time on. I have found several authors I love more than anything. Then random ones I followed enough to read their entire series. But everything is so over saturated it is hard to pick the ones that you think are the best.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?

I read. Right now I am on a dry spell after starting a book and only getting halfway through it. But that is because of working, writing, and family time restraints. I’ve been having issues staying up late because of school, making me wake up so early. So I try to stick to books I know I will enjoy over new authors. Right now, I am torn in the romance genre. I enjoy a lot of different ones from mafia, dark romance, shifter romance, scifi alien romance, and so much more. For Epic Fantasy a lot of them are romantasy based. But I am not shy about trying other genres. These are just ones I gravitated towards these last few years.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?

I do it both ways. There are specific projects that I am writing where I need complete silence in order to think straight. While I have my smoother writing projects where I will listen to music to help me keep from getting bored with my voice. This helps me keep going without getting tired from lack of movement. I have ADD and get bored easily even if I am in the middle of the climax of the story. It is mainly because I can’t sit or work on the same thing for too long before I get the urge to get up and move. Plus, I get distracted easily.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?

I’ve done two projects at once before but it leads to low quality and a lot of rewriting when I would try to jump back and forth. This led me to focusing on one project at a time for now. Right now I am working on “The Emerald Knight.” This is the third installment in my Tales of Tarza series. This is a spin of series from my Tales of Ferrês and based in the same world only in a different kingdom. I might start working on my novels for the world though but not sure if I will write it at the same time as other books. Unless I have free time. Right now I am trying to focus more on publishing and that means not splitting my time between projects.

If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

I would have to say “Song in the Silence.” This is the first dragon book I read as a kid and made me fall in love with the creatures. The author did such a wonderful job writing the first book. I was sad to find out she didn’t continue the series. Then, a few years later, she published the second and third book. Which I devoured without thinking twice. I loved this series so much it made me fall in love with the Fantasy genre. Would highly recommend reading it. “Song in the Silence” is by: Elizabeth Kerner. Sadly, I didn’t read any of her other books. Not sure if she published other books, though. Didn’t quiet follow authors that much back then. Each release was like a big surprise when I went to Barnes and Noble and found the new book on the shelves.

Do you have any advice for new writers?

    • I would say that best thing to do as a writer is to write until your fingers bleed. The more you publish the more readers you gain. I would say the easiest thing to do is overwhelm yourself with projects. This has led me to learn that working on one series at a time is good. It helps me stay on task and give my characters all they need to become a great story. Plus to many projects can get you confused and cause writer’s block. Hope this little tid bit is helpful. Feel free to ask more questions :).

  13. Soha Molina

Question for author-What’s the strangest or most interesting thing you had to research for this book?

    • It’s been awhile since I wrote this series. I didn’t have to result to much research for this series due to the stories already pretty much made up in my mind already before I started writing. Probably the hardest thing to research was maps and trying to keep things similar in landscape through different time points in the world itself. Not one story is in the same period of time as the other. But I do have to figure out how to build my own map to help keep everything organized.
