Gill Calvin Thomas is a retired academic who lives with her husband in Swanage , UK. She finds inspiration in the landscape around her – the Isle of Purbeck has a spectacular coastline and beautiful beaches, and it is whilst walking here, that Gill develops characters and plots the twists and turns you will find in her books.

Gill’s life experiences have informed her writing. For example, her mother’s death when she was a small child, influenced her first book, Vex Not Her Ghost, where the heroine has to delve into the past to uncover the real circumstances of her mother’s death, the cover up and the ongoing corruption. Her experiences as a social work academic governs the plot of her second book, Sister Olive Wouldn’t Hurt a Fly. In this book the fatal combination of a researcher’s mental collapse and a sociopathic opportunist give rise to a cliffhanging finale.

Reviewers have said that Gill writes the sort of books in which you find yourself racing to the end, whilst not wanting to finish. Her characters are compelling, well-drawn and sensitively portrayed. In her books bad people get what they deserve, but it is never quite what it seems.

Once I’d developed the characters and the place, I found it exciting to write. My female characters developed warm friendships. The villains of the piece were male, but when I wrote their back stories I hope to help readers have some sympathy with what entailed.

I’m so glad you like the cover. Rock House doesn’t actually exist, but as I wrote it seemed to develop a character of its own. The ghostly mother and daughter summed up the idea of Caitlin being cast adrift in life without her mother’s love whilst Caitlin searched for a place and time where she could belong.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

I think it’s when I’ve got the characters. I try not to use too much description, their personality comes out in dialogue. I enjoy writing about friendship and how it can develop over time. I also enjoy developing characters back stories, the psychology behind behaviours. I don’t write a detailed plot, more like notes on scraps of paper to help me think things through. I enjoy the characters almost running away with the story once they get going!

My favourite part is writing about the characters. I want them to come alive, so I don’t use that much descriptions, but hope their personality shines through in the dialogue. In this book, Rock House almost became a character – so I do like writing about place too. The whole process of writing a book and solving puzzles as you go, is exciting.

I began to write the story looking at a picture my great aunt had painted of a woman looking out to sea. It reminds me of The French Lieutenant’s woman, but it was painted probably in the late 1800’s – so well before John Fowles wrote his book (also based in Dorset). The woman looking out of the window of Rock House becomes Cessie – a ghostly presence warning her daughter of impending trouble. I like friendly ghosts – Cessie is a minor characters but important to the plot.

I guess most authors set out to write something different to the norm. I didn’t want to write a whodunnit murder that you forget almost as soon as you’ve finished.
